AT&T is a multinational company and one of the world’s largest telecommunications firms. Since 1885, with the invention and development of the telephone, AT&T has evolved and expanded its services to include not just traditional landline and mobile phone services, but also a wide array of modern telecommunications services. This includes high-speed internet, digital TV, and streaming services, making it a comprehensive provider of telecommunications services to the public and private sector. Among these services is AT&T FirstNet, the dedicated, nationwide wireless broadband network for first responders in the United States. This initiative was born out of a partnership between AT&T and the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority), an independent authority within the U.S. Department of Commerce. The creation of FirstNet was motivated by the communication challenges experienced during the 9/11 terrorist attacks and other emergency situations, highlighting the need for a reliable, secure, and dedicated communication system for first responders and public safety agencies. FirstNet is designed to meet the stringent requirements of the public safety community, providing a secure and resilient network that supports the high-speed data needs of first responders, including law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical services, and other public safety personnel. FirstNet provides preemption to these critical users, allowing them to send and receive voice, data, video, images, and text without the congestion or interruptions that can occur on commercial networks, especially during crises or large public events.
