Xan Schmickel

Dr. Schmickel joined CBP in May 2016 after working in the private sector for 20 years. She currently serves as the Chief Architect within the Office of Information and Technology (OIT). In this role she  serves as an advisor to senior management as the viable authoritative source of information concerning Enterprise Architecture. Dr. Schmickel is directly responsible for managing, developing, and implementing enterprise architecture policies, processes, and procedures. She also is responsible for creating a comprehensive enterprise architecture strategy and developing implementation approaches for adoption.

In her previous role as the Lead Architect for OIT’s Border Enforcement and Management Systems Directorate, Dr. Schmickel worked to develop and maintain architectural blueprints, analyze architectural gaps, and guide enterprise architecture in the design and deployment of BEMSD applications. She managed the coordination and development of several large and complex programs of BEMSD, recommending architecture frameworks to streamlining program policies and processes, identifying opportunities for seamless collaboration and enhancement of program processes, methods, and policy to align with the OIT enterprise strategic directions and standards.

Dr. Schmickel holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Sceaux, France; Bachelor of Science in the School of Business from George Mason University; Master’s certificate in Software Engineering, and a Master’s degree in Management Information System from George Mason University. She also earned a Ph.D. in Information Technology specializing in Big Data from Capella University in 2022. Outside of CBP, she is a photography enthusiast and an avid traveler.
